PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To eliminate time delay until data reading/writing, and to improve the accuracy of track follow-up control. SOLUTION: In tracking control carried out at a multi-track magnetic tape device for simultaneously performing reading/writing in plural tracks, in addition to servo track reading heads 5a and 5b provided on the same line as that of reading/writing heads 3 and 4, pre-reading heads 5c and 5d for reading the positional information of a service track before the servo track reading heads 5a and 5b are provided, and the positions of the reading/writing heads 3 and 4 are controlled based on the servo track position information read by the pre-reading heads 5c and 5d.
