PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a controller for a compressor and a control method therefor capable of operating the compressor with the optimum efficiency under the maximum load conditions. SOLUTION: This controller for the compressor comprises a maximum stroke value determining part 21 in which a maximum stroke value stored in advance is compared with an actual stroke value and a stroke command value obtained by changing a stroke command value stored in advance to below the maximum stroke value is outputted or the stroke command value stored in advance is outputted as it is based on a comparison value, a linear compressor 24 which receives a voltage given to a motor inside the compressor by the stroke command value stored in advance or the changed stroke command value and adjusts the vertical movement of a piston by the changed stroke to adjust refrigerating capacity, a voltage/current detection part 26, a stroke calculation part 25, and a stroke control device 23.
