The invention relates to a method and an arrangement for operating an internal combustion engine. The method involves adjusting closing timing of the inlet valve to control the value of lambda from cycle to cycle by: measuring a lambda value and determining a required change of the lambda value for a subsequent combustion cycle; generating an adjustment signal for adjusting IVC timing for a subsequent cycle based on the required change of the lambda value; determining if IVC timing will occur early or late with respect to a switching point at which maximum filling of the cylinder is achieved for said subsequent cycle, and changing the polarity of said signal if the signal causes a switch between early and late IVC timing. <??>The invention further relates to a computer readable storage device having stored therein data representing instructions executable by a computer to operate an internal combustion engine. <IMAGE>
