PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a catalyst capable of manufacturing methacrylic acid in a high yield by vapor phase catalytic oxidation of methacrolein with molecu lar oxygen, to provide a method for manufacturing the catalyst and a method for manufacturing methacrylic acid using the catalyst. SOLUTION: The catalyst for manufacture of methacrylic acid is manufactured by preparing a solution or slurry (liquid A) containing an ammonium-free compound of molybdenum and not containing simple substances or compounds of other elements (exclusive of oxygen) contained in the catalyst and a solution or slurry (liquid B) containing ammonia and/or ammonia compound, mixing the liquids A and B to prepare a mixed liquid AB, mixing the mixed liquid AB with compounds of the other elements, drying and firing the resulting catalyst precursor-containing solution or slurry.
