PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a projection type video display device capable of achieving temperature control of a light source element having a light source array as a light source with simple constitution, thereby always achieving very accurate color reproduction over a long term and keeping the service life of the light source array long in spite of change of ambient temperature and structural change with lapse of time of the light source element itself. SOLUTION: In the projection type video display device which obtains projection light by modulating at least light beams of three primary colors according to image information and synthesizing them, a light source unit is constituted by arranging a plurality of light source elements constituted by disposing the light source array where a plurality of light source elements are arranged on the same substrate on a heat receiving plate, and disposing a heating means and a temperature detection means on the heat receiving plate hierarchically so that the light beam may be guided to the irradiation surface of a synthetic prism for each of three primary colors, and the heat receiving plate of the light source device is connected to a cooling means and also the heating means and the temperature detection means are connected to a control means.
