PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a controller capable of improving the detection accuracy of slippage in a continuously variable transmission. SOLUTION: This controller for the continuously variable transmission, which determines slippage by comparing an estimated value of a transmission ratio or transmission ratio changing speed based on an earlier transmission ratio than than at the present time with an actual value, includes a slippage determination cancellation means (a step S5) which inhibits determination of the slippage based on the estimated value if down-shift required amount for increasing the transmission ratio of the continuously variable transmission is large.
