Compsn. contg. 50-90, esp. 60-70% of its total N as non-protein N (NPN) comprising an acid-hydrolysed polysaccharide-contg. material of vegetable origin (I) and an NPN source (e.g. urea) and opt. other types of feed matl. is improved when (I) has a specific surface of >=10 dm2/g, acid equiv. of 5-50, esp. 20-30 g acetic acid equiv. per kg dry matter, and when it contains 3-20, esp. 8-10 g (I), dry basis per g of NPN. (I) contains >=1 of pentosans, cellulose, lignin or C-contg. matl. The acidity of (I) may be adjusted if necessary with (in)org. acids pref. by vapour treatment. This is a complete feed compsn. and gives max. feed-energy utilisation e.g. energy required to produce 1 kg meat and milk is 15,000 kcal and 800-900 cal resp. (if 19,800 and 1,100-1,200).
