PURPOSE:To obtain an antiviral agent, containing a phage single-stranded DNA of a single-stranded DNA phage as an active ingredient and effective in treating viral diseases, such as viral hepatitis, with hardly any side effects. CONSTITUTION:The aimed substance obtained by introducing a commercially available phage replicated type double-stranded DNA or phage single-stranded DNA, etc, into bacteria by a calcium treating method, etc. cultivating the resultant transformed bacteria, removing the above-mentioned bacteria by centrifugation, etc., concentrating the obtained single-stranded DNA phage solution, deproteinizing the phage to deposit proteins, precipitating the resultant phage with ethanol, etc., to provide a phage single-stranded DNA of a single- stranded DNA phage, blending the resultant phage single-stranded DNA with a suitable solvent, excipient, adjuvant, etc., and preparing a pharmaceutical by a conventional method. The agent can be prepared in the form of an injection, solution ointment, suppository, etc. The dose thereof is 0.01-50mg, preferably 0.1-10mg per kg body weight for an adult.
