ACRYLAMIDE/ALKYLACRYLAMIDE ACRYLATE TERPOLYMER AND PROCESS FOR ITS PREPARATION

Homogeneous micellar redox polymerisation of acrylamide and an oil soluble alkylacrylamide yields a water-soluble polymer of intrinsic viscosity of at least 12 dl/g in 2 wt % NaCl. Hydrolysis of the polymer with alkali metal or ammonium base gives a derivative of the formula: wherein R1 is straight chain or branched alkyl or cycloalkyl group, preferably C6 to C22; R2 is the same or different alkyl group as R1, or hydrogen; M<+> is an alkali metal or ammonium cation; x is 0.50 to 0.999; y is 0.001 to 0.05; and z is up to 0.50.
