A process and device are disclosed for melting scrap in a direct current-driven closed shaft furnace. The scrap is fed in a ring area at the furnace end, the hot gases which flow against the falling scrap are sucked below the scrap feeding area by the cylindrical outer wall of the scrap column, and the inner free surface of the ring-shaped flat cross section is reduced before the scrap reaches the melting zone. In the melting zone, the scrap is exposed to the electric arc at the center of the flat cross section. The arc furnace is designed in such a way that the cathode (21) is held by the electrode bearing device (30) designed as a concentrical pipe (31) with respect to the central axis (I) of the vessel. At its head end, the pipe (31) is conically tapered (34) and at its bottom end it is supported on the shaft (11) by bearing arms. A flue gas channel (19) which surrounds the shaft (11) is provided at the head of the shaft furnace (10).
|
