Novel transition metal compounds comprising at least one monovalent anionic ligand having a six-membered ring structure wherein six pi -electrons and at least one boron atom are contained and a transition metal selected from among Group 4A elements of the periodic table; a process for the preparation of the compound; a polymerization catalyst for olefins comprising the above transition metal compound; and a process for efficiently producing olefin homopolymers or copolymers by the use of the compound. The polymerization of one or more olefins with the catalyst comprising the transition metal compound gives homopolymers having a narrow molecular weight distribution or copolymers having a narrow molecular weight distribution and a uniform composition, and the obtained homopolymers and copolymers are excellent in impact strength, stress cracking resistance, transparency, blocking resistance and so on and exhibit a low stickiness and a low extractible content.
