In the process, the untreated water is passed through a bed (2) of a buoyant, granular support material, which acts as a support and growth surface for the microorganisms. During the biological degradation process, the interstitial spaces in the support material fill with biomass, which is removed at intervals with the aid of a washing process. To increase the efficiency of the washing process, support material is removed beforehand from the bed (2) with the aid of a jet pump (11), separated from the biomass and subsequently, together with the separated biomass, returned to the untreated water side of the bed.
