<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To suppress continuation of vibration caused by the movement of development units without sacrificing the easiness of maintenance such as detachment of the development units or image carriers of an image forming apparatus. <P>SOLUTION: Before development, development units 40 (41 to 44) are moved in advance by cams 91, 92, etc. of a development unit moving device 90 from a first standby position P1, or the initial position, which is apart from a photoreceptor belt 21 by a distance X1, to a second standby position P2 set at a distance X2 (<X1) that is closer to the photoreceptor belt 21.
