PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent the occurrence of color mixture due to that the surrounding area is stained by mists when ink is discharged to an idle discharge receiving section during printing. SOLUTION: The image forming apparatus is provided with: a color recording head; a maintaining unit 8 which maintains the discharge function of a recording head 3 by covering a nozzle surface formed on the recording head with a cap; the idle discharge receiving sections 16 and 17 which receive a liquid drop discharged from the recording head 3, regardless of an image; and a conveying means which conveys a recording medium to under the recording head. The idle discharge receiving sections 16 and 17 are arranged to be adjacent to the maintaining unit 8 in the recording medium conveying direction of the conveying means 9 and the idle discharge of only one of a black recording head and the color recording head to the idle discharge receiving sections 16 and 17 can be performed. The idle discharge receiving sections 16 and 17 and the maintaining unit 8 are configured to be movable in the recording medium conveying direction of the conveying means 9.
