<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a person protecting device that lifts up the rear side of a hood, can protect a pedestrian or the like by expanding an air bag along an A pillar, and shares a hood pressing up device and a gas pressure source for expanding the air bag. <P>SOLUTION: When a collision of the pedestrian or the like is detected or predicted, gas from a gas generator 38 is introduced into a cylinder 40, a piston 42 and a piston rod 44 are pressed up, and the rear side of the hood 12 is pressed up.
