METHOD AND APPARATUS FOR MATERIAL IDENTIFICATION

A method and apparatus for material identification is disclosed. In one aspect, a method for material identification comprises screening an object with radiation to generate one or more radiation energy spectra from which the material is identified. In another aspect, radiation energy spectra are generated with an apparatus comprising one or more detector material components; a photomultiplier; analog signal conditioning apparatus; and an interface to a digital processing system. In another aspect, material identification comprises the use of radiation energy spectra for the estimation of material effective atomic number based at least partially on the use of either calibrated or un-calibrated energy spectra. In a further aspect, material identification is achieved by generation of 2 dimensional stereoscopic images using an apparatus comprising a radiation source and two rows of radiation detectors, wherein 2-dimensional stereoscopic images may be used to generate a 3-dimensional reconstruction of an object.
