Remotely pumped line amplifier and receiver preamplifier

Pump light is sent via a transmission path to the amplifier. A split optical amplifier is disposed in front of the optical receiver. The amplifier includes a lightly doped and very long active optical fibre. A passive fibre is disposed in the signal path between the split optical amplifier and the input of the optical receiver. The passive fibre takes up a significant portion of the total length of the transmission path. The end of the passive fibre has a connector for the pump radiation source along with a connector for the input of the optical amplifier. The doping of the active fibre depends on the desired pump efficiency or the desired S/N ratio.
