METHOD FOR EXPANDING TRANSMISSION CAPACITY AND OPTICAL TRANSMITTING TERMINAL STATION DEVICE

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To increase the number of signal wavelengths at a low cost.

SOLUTION: Additional equipment 20 is inserted between the existing equipment 10 and a submarine optical cable. In the existing equipment 10, optical transmitters 12-1 to 12-n respectively output signal light of a different wavelength. An optical multiplexer 14 multiplexes each output signal light of the optical transmitters 12-1 to 12-n. In the additional equipment 20, optical transmitters 22-1 to 22-m respectively output signal light of a different wavelength. An additional wavelength is different from the existing wavelength. An optical multiplexer 24 multiplexes output signal light of each of the optical transmitters 22-1 to 22-m. An optical multiplexer 26 multiplexes output light of the optical multiplexer 14 and the optical multiplexer 24 and makes the multiplexed light incident on the submarine optical cable. The optical transmitters 22-1 to 22-m are provided with error correction (FEC) capabilities higher than those of the optical transmitters 12-1 to 12-n. The output signal light power of each of the optical transmitters 22-1 to 22-m is set such that each added signal light power is lower than each existing signal light power on the submarine optical cable.
