A process for stereoselectively reducing .alpha.-amino haloketone derivative s under mild conditions, which comprises reacting an .alpha.-amino haloketone derivative of general formula (1) with a compound prepared from a n organoaluminum compound of general formula (4), a sulfonic acid derivative of the general formula (5): R6SO3H, and an alcohol compound of the general formula (6) R7OH to yield an .alpha.--amino alcohol derivative of general formula (7).
