PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a battery pack which is reduced in circuit mounting area and component cost by realizing a stable protection function of a secondary battery, mainly by software control. SOLUTION: When a battery cell is in an overdischarged state, the voltage across the terminals of an external power supply terminal connected to a charger is stepped up by a power circuit 10 and is supplied to a microcontroller. When the output power of the power circuit 10 reaches a predetermined start-up voltage, the microcontroller is started up, according to a notification from the power circuit 10 to initialize the system. Thereafter, when the voltage across terminals of the battery cell rises to a predetermined level, supply voltage to the microcontroller is switched to the stepped-up voltage across the terminals of the battery cell.
