Method and apparatus for the automatic filling of a continuous casting mould with (steel) melt in which the melt (13) is poured into the continuous casting mould (18) in a controlled manner through a bottom outlet opening (14) of a launder (10) or of a tongue dish, the opening being closable by means of an automatically actuated plug (15) which, during the filling of the continuous casting mould (18), executes predetermined up and down movements (double arrow 45), in particular up and down movements dependent on the molten metal level (19) in the continuous casting mould (18), executing these movements counter to the action of an elastic element which urges the plug (15) into the closed position. The up and down movement of the plug (15) is accomplished by means of an actuating member (B) acting directly on the upper end of the said plug, the elastic element (A) urging the plug (15) into the closed position attempting to push the plug (15) into the closed position in a correspondingly increasing manner as the temperature increases. As the elastic element (A), use is preferably made of closed gas-pressure springs (48), while the actuating member (B) is preferably formed by open spring elements (49) which, as regards their design, correspond to the closed spring elements (48). <IMAGE>
