PURPOSE: To provide a liquid crystal display device having high contrast and excellent visual angle characteristics. CONSTITUTION: This device is equipped with at least a liquid crystal panel, a pair of polarizing plates 10, 11 on both sides of a liquid crystal layer 7, a phase difference plate 12 which changes optical characteristics according to the orientation state of liquid crystal molecules, and a driving circuit. The liquid crystal panel consists of a pair of substrates 1, 4, liquid crystal layer 7 between the substrates, orienting films 3, 6 to control the orientation of the liquid crystal molecules in the liquid crystal layer 7 in contact with the surface of each substrate into a specified direction, and a spacer 8 to hold a certain gap between the substrates. The vector sum of the orientation direction of the liquid crystal molecules on both substrates is parallel to the vertical visual angle direction of the liquid crystal display device. Further, such an optical medium that render the intensity of transmitted light entering perpendicular to the thickness direction of the liquid crystal panel to be different between the same right and left angles is disposed in the thickness direction of the liquid crystal layer 7. |
