A first (11) and second (10) band are pattern pitch marked and one is stretched relative to the other to align the marks in a press with an electrically heated first plate (8) and a fluid-cooled second plate (9). The temperatures and tensions are adjusted by a control unit (23) in conjunction with a television camera (24) and image analyser (25). The band with the largest linear expansion is applied to the cooled plate. The second band (of pre-cut metal) is stored on an unwinding spool (17) with an interleaved band (41). The first band (of pre-perforated insulator) is similarly stored (18).
