<p>A manually operated mail sorting station (100) which includes a case (106) having numerous bins (114) in which sorted mail is placed. The mail sorting station (100) includes a scanner (104) that reads an address printed on the unsorted mail. The scanner (104) includes a communications interface (112). A computer (102) for the mail sorting station (100) is connected to the communications interface (112) of the scanner (104). The computer (102) includes a program (110) responsive to the signals transmitted by the scanner (104) on the communications interface (112). The program (110) includes instructions that translate the signals into an internal address representation. The program (110) stores a scheme representing an assignment of addresses to bins (114) in the sorting case as well as instructions that match the internal address representation against the scheme to select one of the bins (114) as the correct bin (114) for the unsorted mail.</p> |
