The amount of liquid(2) which is removed from the applicator roller(8) is applied to the subject surface(3). The liquid may be a highly viscous substance and especially a synthetic resin adhesive. The liquid removed from the roller is pushed into a gap(15) leading to the subject surface by the pressure head existing in front of the doctor blade(12). The speed of the roller is governed according to the fluid pressure in the gap. An Independent claim is included for a device for the application of a liquid onto a surface in which a channel forming a gap is located between the roller and subject surface, and a doctor blade is positioned behind the channel in the rotational direction of the roller.
