PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image pickup element having a constitution, wherein a sufficient number of continuous-photography exposures and a high-accuracy high-speed photography can be taken with low noise. SOLUTION: An image pickup element 21 is formed by superposing a plurality of chips, which respectively have a plurality of conversion parts 33 arranged, in such a way as to constitute one row or a plurality of rows of the conversion parts 33 in the vicinities of first end parts 31a and convert indident rays into electrical signals, and a plurality of electrical signal storage parts 35, which are extended from the conversion parts 33 to second ends 31b on the sides opposite to the first ends 31a and store the electrical signals. The first ends 31a of each chip 31 are shifted from the first ends 31a of the adjacent chip 31, so that the rows of the conversion parts 33 of each chip 31 are exposed in a stepwise form.
