The device (1) has an excitation device (16) to form vibrations to jolt paving stones (4-6) into place. A base body (2) has at least one butt element (7-9) that fits on the paving stones and side guide elements (12,13) to engage the paving stones and guide and limit the sideways movement of the paving stones during the vibration. The surface (3) of the base body fitted against the paving stones is shaped to fit the paving stones. Independent claims are included for a device to straighten a pavement, especially near a gutter, and a method for laying a smooth pavement.
