PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a monitoring device for a vehicle appropriately controlling light exposure. SOLUTION: This monitoring device for the vehicle is equipped with a rear camera 2 photographing an image in the rear of the vehicle; a front illumination sensor 3 detecting illumination in the front of the vehicle; a rear illumination detecting part 2a detecting the illumination in a photographing region of the rear camera 2; a gear position sensor 4 detecting a gear position; a light switch 5 detecting lighting and lights out of a light; a speed sensor 6; and a control device 8 which is a control center. The illumination in a region to be photographed with the rear camera 2 is detected in the early stage based on illumination data detected with the front illumination sensor 3, and the light exposure on a screen displaying on a monitor 7 is controlled based on the detected illumination data. Even in the case where ambient illumination is suddenly changed, an image can be displayed at appropriate light exposure.
