An automatic assembly sorts numerous items (12) as these proceed side-by-side along a conveyer belt (10) where they are exposed to a sensor that registers one or more parameters relating to each object. On the basis of the parameters a computer calculates a new sequence using an algorithm. The items are then temporarily deposited by transfer elements (16) at holding points (14) alongside the conveyer.
