<p>1362277 Multipolymer STAUFFER CHEMICAL CO 1 Dec 1971 [23 Dec 1970 20 Sept 1971] 55689/71 Headings C3G and C3P Multipolymer particles are obtained by forming a latex of a cross-linked acrylic rubber having a glass transition temperature below 25‹ C. by emulsion polymerization and polymerizing vinyl chloride in the latex by suspension technique whereby the vinyl chloride polymer surrounds and/or is homogeneously idspersed in the emulsion polymer particles. The emulsion polymer is of an aromatic or C 2 -C 8 alkyl acrylate with a polyunsaturated crosslinking comonomer and optionally other comonomers, e.g. butyl acrylate with ethylene glycol or 1,3-butylene glycol dimethacrylate. The emulsifier used preferably has an HLB of 2-12 or above 40, e.g. bis(tridecyl)ester of sodium sulphosuccinate or sodium 2-ethylhexyl sulphate whereby the emulsion polymer particles have a size of 0À1-0À8 microns. The monomer charge is preferably added in stages. A suspension stabilizer is added to the latex, preferably hydroxypropyl methyl cellulose having a viscosity of about 15,000 cps. Vinyl chloride is then polymerized or copolymerized with a monomer-soluble initiator. The products are used as impact modifiers for rigid thermoplastic resins.</p> |
