The invention relates to the field of charge-transfer photosensitive matrices which are associated with a read register and with a control circuit, which is able to deliver control signals to the matrix and to the register so as to provide for the reading of the matrix. The invention consists in modifying the control signals providing for standard operation of the matrix 1 and of the register 2 in order to reduce the time required for reading the matrix, either by adding up the information contained in adjacent points of the matrix, or by avoiding reading some of these points, or by combining both methods. In the embodiment of figure 6, the number of readings of the register 2 is reduced by reading the rows in groups of M rows. The number of horizontal transfers effected during each reading of the register 2 is also reduced by arranging a mask 3 over a few columns of the matrix, namely those furthest from the output S of the register 2. Thus, each reading of the register requires only N pulses enabling the N columns of the matrix which are not masked to be read. Application to row-transfer, frame-transfer and single-frame photosensitive devices. <IMAGE>
