The invention relates to a method of controlling the printing process of an offset printing machine. In order to ensure a simple and low-cost implementation of the process control, without the perpetual use of a monitoring operator, this method is characterized by the following steps: - setting and coordinating the variables which influence the printing process, - controlling a variable e.g. ink density chosen as control variable of a main control loop by means of a chosen actuating variable e.g. ink quantity, - adjusting the remaining variables to set constant reference values by means of auxiliary control loops, decoupled to a large extent, and using said variables as disturbance variables of the main control loop. If modification of an actuating variable of an auxiliary control loop exceeds a tolerance range, the step of setting and coordinating may be repeated, perhaps after a product checking operation e.g. using a densitometer on sample sheets.
