A method for operating yarn-processing devices, in which is formed a thread balloon which, during the normal operation of the device, comes into contact, at least on parts of its circumference, with surface regions of the device, for example a balloon limiter, which limits its free expansion. Varying states in the case of superficial deposits of viscous fibre accompanying materials on the surface regions not normally touched by the thread balloon lead to yarn changes in the event of fluctuations in the balloon shape. This is prevented in that, during the processing process, one or more operating conditions are varied at predetermined time intervals for a predetermined time segment, in such a way that the thread balloon comes into contact with different surface regions from those during normal operation. This ensures that, even in the event of fluctuations in the balloon shape, the thread always strikes approximately identical surface regions produced by itself.
