The engine (E) has an adjustable timing mechanism for the inlet valves and a knock sensor (24) attached to the outside of the engine (E), providing a signal representing the engine vibration to allow the engine compression ratio to be altered by adjusting the timing of the inlet valves. Pref., a knock sensor signal is fed to an operating device (28) used to displace a rod (30) acting on one end of a two-armed pivot lever (22). The other end of the latter acts on a setting element (21) between a timing drive shaft (17) and the driven camshaft (14). ADVANTAGE - Improved thermic efficiency.
