PURPOSE: To obtain a plant growth retarding agent for preventing the growth and rankness of weeds by forming a coating film composed of two specific kinds of compounds on a granular material having high whiteness. CONSTITUTION: A granular material having high whiteness is coated with a coating film composed of a composition containing titanium dioxide having photocatalytic function and a zeolite having antibacterial property as a part of the composition. The granular material is preferably a natural stone such as marble or white pegmatite quartz having rounded form with diameter of about 3-15mm. The titanium dioxide having photocatalytic function is preferably ultrafine particles of 0.01-0.1μm diameter. The titanium dioxide has a function to clean the soil by decomposing the agrochemical residue impregnated into the soil and decomposes organic matter to retard the growth of plant. The growth of germinated sprout is retarded by the oxidation reaction promoted by the photocatalyst. Since the titanium dioxide is insoluble in water, the above effects are semi-permanently maintained. Zeolite suppresses the germination of seed and is resistant to the dissolution and flow out with rainwater to semi- permanently keep its antibacterial effect.
