PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To greatly extend the transmission distance without using an modulator such as a system using soliton waves by inversely compensating for and cancelling the spread caused by the wavelength dispersion characteristics of optical signals. SOLUTION: Optical signals, which are modulated in accordance with the information by an optical transmitter 2, are generated. When the signals are transmitted to an optical receiver 4 by an optical fiber 3, the spread of the signals caused by the wavelength dispersion characteristics during the transmission in the fiber 3 is inversely compensated for by a phase conjugate mirror 7. Then, the signals transmitted in the fiber 3 are amplified with no reproducing by first and second optical fiber amplifier repeaters 5 and 6, the repeating distance is made longer, the signals are led to the receiver 4 and the transmitted information contained in the signals is reproduced. |
