Temperature sensors (6,7) are fitted in the motor primary (2) and secondary (3) cooling circuits. Their outputs are connected to a monitoring unit (12) which, for a specific period after the motor has been running, compares their temperature characteristics as a function of time with one or more specific characteristics. From the deviation from these the monitoring system determines whether or not the thermostatic valve (4) is functioning.
