PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing polyester fibers containing substantially no metal compound and eliminated from problems such as spinneret fouling, a rise in filtration pressure and yarn breakage by carrying out a polymerizing reaction using a solid catalyst, then subjecting the prepared polyester composition substantially freed from the solid catalyst to a solid-phase polymerization and forming the resultant polyester composition into a fibrous state, and to obtain the polyester fibers capable of providing the final product sufficiently retaining raw yarn performances even in a severe high-order processing step and having excellent performances with a slight environmental load. SOLUTION: This method for producing the polyester fibers comprises forming the polyester composition without substantially containing the metal compound into the fibrous state. Furthermore, the method for producing the polyester fibers comprises carrying out the polymerizing reaction in a solid-liquid heterogeneous system using the solid catalyst as a polycondensation catalyst, then subjecting the resultant polyester composition freed from the solid catalyst to the solid-phase polymerization and forming the polyester composition into the fibrous state.
