PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a hydrated silicic acid-base filler which has an average particle size adequate as a filler for paper of the hydrated silicic acid-base filler, is high in a specific scattering coefficient which is great in the ability to enhance the opacity of paper and is capable of maintaining an oil absorption rate at a high level. SOLUTION: This hydrated silicate is obtained by neutralizing an aqueous sodium silicate solution by a mineral acid and an aqueous acidic metal salt solution, has a content of a metal compound of 0.5 to 8 wt.% (to SiO2 wt.%) in terms of oxide, has the average particle size of 1 to 15μm in a measured value by a laser method, has the oil absorption rate of 200 to 350 ml/100 g, is compounded as the filler to be internally added to the paper and is 300 to 450 m<2> /g in the specific scattering coefficient indicating the ability to improve the opacity of the paper.
