A small scale assembly sterilises air or water by exposure to an ultraviolet radiation source (24) at the centre of a battery of chambers (K1-K4), each separated from the next by a transparent partition. The chambers form a single, stacked longitudinal flow passage. Each chamber opens to the next outer chamber. The incoming gas or water (4) is introduced to the innermost chamber and progresses to the next outer chamber. The ultraviolet emitter operates in the wavelength range 180 nm to 254 nm and is at the centre of a concentric array of cascading translucent chambers.
