PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an absorbent article, where no trouble such as the rupture of a barrier sheet can occur during its manufacture, and the barrier sheet area coming into contact with the skin can be reduced. SOLUTION: A diaper 1, an example of the absorbent article, includes an absorbent chassis comprising a cover sheet 6 and a liquid absorbent structure 7, as well as a barrier sheet 8 allowing excretions to pass through. The barrier sheet 8 is separated from the liquid absorbent structure 7 in the direction of its thickness by a barrier sheet shrinking means 33. The barrier sheet 8 has front and rear communicating parts 27, 28 defined by an intermediary part 26. This intermediary part 26 is a different part from the barrier sheet shrinking means 33, and is provided with intermediary elastic members 38, 39 to shrink the intermediary part 26 in the direction of Y which is the forward and rearward direction of the article.
