<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for testing a discharge which enables the easy testing of a discharge of a pretreatment liquid, and also to provide a test liquid applicator and a test sheet. <P>SOLUTION: The method for testing the discharge of a pretreatment liquid is performed prior to an ink jet recording method, and comprises the pretreatment step of discharging/depositing the pretreatment liquid containing a pigment ink flocculating agent on the face of a recording medium on which data are recorded, and the recording step of recording data on the face of the recording medium to which the pretreatment liquid is applied, in the pretreatment step by an ink jet process using the pigment ink. The test liquid which shows a coloring reaction to the pigment ink flocculating agent is applied to the face of the recording medium, and the pretreatment liquid is discharged to the face to which the test liquid is applied from the recording head and deposited on the face.
