The invention relates to a method for operating a motor vehicle (1) using a longitudinal driver assistance system (2). The driver assistance system comprises at least one sensor (3), which detects the region in front of the vehicle, and a controller (4), which is designed to detect a vehicle travelling ahead on the basis of sensor information and to output control or regulating commands to one or more of the vehicle components (5, 6) used for the longitudinal guiding process in order to guide the motor vehicle (1) relative to the vehicle travelling ahead when the driver assistance system (2) is activated and operationally ready. A control or regulating operation of the activated and operationally ready driver assistance system (2) can be deactivated by a driver activity and vice versa, wherein when no vehicles traveling ahead are detected by the activated driver assistance system (2) and the driver assistance system (2) is deactivated by a driver activity, a detection of the region in front of the vehicle is continuously carried out and when a vehicle traveling ahead is detected, either a notification is output to the driver to reactivate the driver assistance system by means of another driver activity and to set the system to the control or regulating operation or the driver assistance system is automatically activated and switched to the control or regulating operation. |
