A backlight, comprising: a frame having an opening formed in an upper surface thereof and having a substantially rectangular plan shape; a light guide plate assembly disposed inside the frame and including a light guide plate and a light source fitted to a light incident surface formed in a peripheral surface of the light guide plate; and an optical sheet disposed on the light guide plate; the backlight being configured to guide light incident on the light guide plate from the light source and emit illumination light through the opening, wherein the frame is a metal plate with a bent portion and includes: a bottom surface portion facing a rear surface of the light guide plate; a peripheral surface portion standing on a peripheral edge of the bottom surface portion; and an upper surface portion bent from an upper end of the peripheral surface portion to form a peripheral edge of the opening, and an outer shape of the light guide plate assembly is smaller than the opening; and an upper surface of the optical sheet is disposed below a lower surface of the upper surface portion.
