PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve print picture quality by properly correcting a backlight image.

SOLUTION: An image property decision means 5 extract a part of extremely high luminance in image data as a high-luminance image area and decides property of the input image data. An edge pixel extracting means 6 extracts a pixel in the portion where the brightness level largely changes as an edge pixel for each of pixels. A subject part decision means 7 regards the position of the pixel as a boundary between the high-luminance pixel area and a subject portion. Then the area positioned on the opposite side form the high-luminance pixel area across the boundary is decided as a subject portion. Then a brightness correction means 11 corrects the brightness of the object portion and high- luminance pixel area.
