Second order non-linearities in glass are created by exposing glass to an electron or ion beam. Electrons from the beam penetrate the glass to set up a space charge field to give rise to a second order non-linearity. As electron beams, in particular, can be readily and accurately controlled, the location and size of non-linearities can accurately be determined. The beam may also be used to modify, for example, to erase, non-linearities formed by conventional poling methods.
|
