PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain the subject new aromatic compound capable of giving a novolak-type resin not accompanied with generation of a useless by-product and without being oxidized to gelled. SOLUTION: This compound is expressed by formula I [Rb is a group of formula II R is H, an alkyl, an alkenyl, an aryl, a halogen or an aralkyl; (n) is 0-3}, a group of formula III (X is O, CH2 or a single bond), etc.; Ra and Rc are each a group of formula IV or V, etc.], e.g. 4,4'-bis(phenoxymethyl)biphenyl. The compound of the formula I is obtained by subjecting a corresponding bishalogenomethyl aromatic compound and a corresponding aromatic hydroxy compound to a dehalogenating hydrogen reaction in the presence of an alkaline substance such as an inorganic alkaline substance or an organic amine. |
