PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To produce the subject 3-methylthiophene-2-carbaldehyde by separating a 3-methylthiophene-2-imine derivative from a production mixture resultant from the dehydrative condensation reaction between methylthiophenecarbaldehyde and 3-methylthiphene-2-imine and hydrolyzing the isolated imine derivative in the presence of an acid. SOLUTION: The dehydrative condensation reaction between a mixture of 3-methylthiophene-2-carbaldehyde with 3-methylthiophene-5-carbaldehyde and a primary amine of the formula: RNH2 [R is an alkyl, an alkenyl, a (substituted) aryl, a (substituted) aralkyl] (for example, aniline, p-toluidine, p-anisidine, p- chloroaniline or the like is carried out to form a mixture of 3-methylthiophene-2- imine derivative of formula I and 3-mthylthiopene-2-imine derivative. 3- Methylthiophene-2-imine derivative is separated from this mixture and hydrolyzed in the presence of an acid, for example, hydrochloric acid or the like, to give the objective 3-methylthiophene-2-carbaldehyde.
