Since absorption of basic wave by a fiber increases for obtaining high output wavelength conversion light of class W, it is required to shorten the fiber length. Since oscillation efficiency deteriorates, however, as the fiber length is shortened, it is difficult to produce a high output basic wave. When excitation light entering the fiber is turned back in the fiber, the excitation light is absorbed efficiently and the basic wave is amplified with a high gain. When the fiber length is shortened, absorption of the basic wave is reduced and output of the basic wave is enhanced. Consequently, a wavelength converter ensuring a stabilized high output up to class W is achieved.
