The present invention relates to non-replicating probiotic micro-organisms and their health benefits. In particular, the present invention provides a means to help parents to protect their children from gastro-intestinal infections, in particular diarrhea. One embodiment of the present invention relates to a composition comprising non-replicating probiotic micro-organisms for use in the prevention or treatment of gastrointestinal infections in children.

A method for treatment of gastrointestinal infections in children comprising administering to a child in need of same a therapeutically-effective amount of a composition comprising non-replicating probiotic micro-organisms that have been rendered non-replicating by a heat treatment at a temperature of 120° C. to 140° C. for 5-15 seconds, wherein the probiotic micro-organisms are selected from the group consisting of Bifidobacteria, Lactobacilli, Propionibacteria, and combinations thereof, and the composition is administered in an amount to provide about 0.005 mg-1000 mg of the non-replicating micro-organisms to the child per day.
